Anti-Valentines: The Room and Random Acts of Wildness

Anti-Valentines: The Room and Random Acts of Wildness

Tonight, two special screenings of modern cult classic movie The Room were held at FACT, with special Q&A sessions with writer-director-producer-actor Tommy Wiseau and his co-star Greg Sestero. In a move that was always sure to live up to its 'anti-Valentine's tour' billing, the pair came, they saw, they played a little American football in the bar (selling the film's signature drink of 'scotchka' for the evening), before meeting and greeting their audience; a collective slightly giddy in its disbelief. In a building where anything can happen and usually does, it was still one of the stranger sights I've ever seen there. The unconventional melodrama, now sold by its mysterious multi-hyphenate Wiseau as a film that was always supposed to be a black comedy, has grown in popularity since its 2003 release by audiences left slack-jawed in amazement at practically every weird and wonderful aspect of it. A whole Rocky Horror-style code of conduct has grown around the film, with dialogue for fans to shout and props to be flung at certain points. Not many would really call it a date movie.

If, by the end of the week you're still dodging V-Day - or still attempting to laugh someone into bed, perhaps - then there's another event that will fit the bill, as comedy duo Random Acts of Wildness host 'an alternative to Valentine's' with the return of their nights at Sefton Palm House on Friday (February 15).

Also on the bill will be a whole host of Liverpool talent, including Joe Ward Munrow, who we may know as a playwright but also does stand up, girl group with a twist Clitingham Avenue, the brilliant Caz and Britney, comic actors Liam Tobin and Jamie Greer, magician David Alnwick and Matt Ganley, last seen in the Playhouse's rock 'n roll panto.
For £7, you'd be mad not to. Tickets are available here.
