Family musical Leave Hitler to Me, Lad

A family musical, set in wartime, with music from a member of a Santa Barbara pop punk quartet? That will be Duckegg Theatre's latest, Leave Hitler to Me, Lad, that comes to the Liverpool Actors Studio on March 4. The show has been performed on and off since an Edinburgh Fringe run in 2011, where it was described as "the most sensitive and well-written family show of the festival". The Liverpool performance is part of its first full UK tour. It's written by the North Lincolnshire company's creative director and playwright Haley Cox, with, somewhat inexplicably, music from LA composer Ben Pringle of the indie band Nerf Herder, most famous for composing the theme to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Based on a true story, Leave Hitler To Me, Lad tells the untold tale of a lost generation of children in the aftermath of World War 2. Set in 1952, it follows the story of schoolboy Brian, who is still waiting for his war hero dad to return home. If that sounds a little improbable, watch how it all comes together in the rather lovely trailer below. Brian builds his own little family of his friends at school - Gladys, an orphan; George, who doesn't know where his parents are either; and Mr Bill his welfare officer. But heads turn when a glamorous teenager appears to unravel the past and reveal a shocking secret that will turn Brian's world upside down, forever. The cast mixes four professional actors with six of the company’s youth theatre members. Haley Cox's production is based on the real experiences of her father and his school friends during their time at Great Stony residential school during and after World War II.
