A new version of the Dickens classic Great Expectations is taking place in the grand surrounds of St George's Hall this bank holiday weekend. The show is the brainchild of city playwright Ian Carroll, who says: "I wanted to do another period piece and I found a copy of Great Expectations in my wife's bookcase. Reading the book for the first time in years, I was reminded what a great story it was, with some of the finest characters in English literature, such as Miss Havisham and the convict Magwitch.  I though it would be perfect for my cast and so we set to work - we're doing a lively, vibrant, entertaining version of the text."Carroll's previous work has included drama Adolf in Toxteth, the perennially successful Tommy Cooper Show, and an adaptation of Frankenstein that took place in the Bombed Out Church. There will be three shows of Great Expectations this weekend in Liverpool, followed by three shows at the Shelley Theatre in Bournemouth.  Catch it in our neck of the woods at the Grand Central Hall on Renshaw Street from tomorrow (Saturday, August 27) until Monday (August 29), with all shows at 7pm.Lipa graduate Raffe Wood has composed an original musical score, and the cast features James Ledsham as Pip, Katie King as Estella, Elisa Cowley as Miss Havisham, James McMartin as Magwitch, Alex Leece as Herbert Pocket, and Andrew Wall as Mr Jaggers.Tickets for Great Expectations are £10 and will be available on the door or by purchasing in advance at skiddle.com.
