Matchbox Comedy strikes again

Matchbox Comedy Club is a new(ish) monthly night at the Lantern Theatre, featuring a line up of  what organisers call “outside of the box” funny. Hosted by city standup Alastair Clark and featuring new and established fringe talent, it sounds like the audience and the acts can expect a bit of the unexpected, comedy wise.They say: "Every single one of the acts on our bill comes with our personal recommendation. Like an overexcited psychopath child with a butterfly collection, we’ve stuffed a bunch of our favourite comedy people into a matchbox and put them on display. It’s a carefully curated living museum of funny."It’s 'alternative', whatever that means, so sometimes it might be odd, shambolic and gorgeously inexplicable. There’ll be sketch troupes, double acts, songs, clowning, stand ups and sometimes even jokes. It’s also new material so it’s delightfully rough around the edges, treading the fine line between genius and disaster. Come and be part of our club."The club is the brainchild of Clark and THAT Comedy Productions, who also do a rather nifty comedy blog.Upcoming participants include Liam Pickford ("an articulate stand up who marries whimsy, introspection and observation"), friends of this blog (not THAT blog, although them too, I s'pose) sketch troupe Legion of Doom, Jayne Edwards ("blurs the line between stand-up and character.... unlike anything you’ve ever seen before") and comics including Adam Staunton, Will Setchell, Mike Milling, Sam Brady, and impro characters Leslie and Lesley DeBondeville.Follow Matchbox on Twitter or pop down to their nights - the next one is this Wednesday (April 8), and will be followed up with gigs on May 13, June 10 and July 8.
