The tireless - and awesome - Merseyside Dance Initiative  showcases a selection of provocative new dance by northern artists in the city this week.Northern Dances, this Thursday  (October 10) at the Capstone Theatre, presents six works by rising stars of dance based in Liverpool, Manchester, Yorkshire, Newcastle and Edinburgh.Now a regular autumn fixture in the city’s cultural calendar, Northern Dances reveals the diverse and exciting range of dance being created across the region.This includes work from Liverpool’s Taciturn dance company (pictured) bring their fresh take on all that it is to be female in new commission Femme. From the everyday to the extraordinary, the piece looks at the many performances of a woman.Maelstrom, whose artists are drawn from all over the North West,  present a "wonderfully in-yer-face" look at the lengths we’ll go to on the dating scene to convince people we’re younger, sexier and more exciting.Choreographer and film-maker Joelene English’s piece is a haunting rediscovery of poets’ Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath’s destructive relationship, while Nathan Geering explores what happens when a harmless infatuation becomes an addiction through his own brand of lyrical hip hop.MDI’s artistic director, Karen Gallagher MBE, says the programme demonstrates the high levels of creativity and excellence emerging in the North.She said: “This is contemporary dance that sets out to entertain but also to provoke a response, whether that’s shock, wonder, thought or laughter. Merseyside Dance Initiative is committed to developing new ways of supporting artists and presenting work from the region."Northern Dances is staged partnership with Yorkshire Dance, Dance City in Newcastle and DanceBase in Edinburgh.
