Socialist classic inspires Mersey youth theatre
A new production of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is keeping alive the spirit of the classic and inspirational socialist novel. The play is being staged later this month by the Merseyside Young Labour group, who are fundraising for mental health charity Time to Change and food aid organisation Bread of Life, as well as helping to support their own work in the community. The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists was the only book ever written by Dublin-born painter and decorator Robert Tressell. It was published in 1914, three years after his death in Liverpool after a lifetime of moving around the country - and the world - to work. The book told the tale of the daily struggles of a group of working men, the poverty of the lower classes and the relationship between them and their employers. Its message has resonated over the last century and its themes remain relevant today. The play, based on playwright Tom McLennan's adaptation of the novel, will be performed from August 29 to 31 at Wirral Youth Theatre, on Pilgrim Street in Birkenhead. The company includes members of YEP [Young Everyman and Playhouse]. Jasmin Beckett of Wirral Young Labour explains: "We don't have a ticket price but rather a ticket pricing policy of pay what you can afford, so do just that! This we feel is inclusive and progressive, allowing us to fundraise for our group and two charities whilst not excluding anyone." Read more about the production on the company's blog.
