REVIEW: Scottie Road the Musical, Unity Theatre

Caz and Britney are back, back, BACK!The inimitable Scouse bird double act have been on stage all this week with a revival of Scottie Road the Musical. In the last few years actresses Gillian Hardie and Keddy Sutton have become familiar faces on the city's performing arts scene and very much with good reason - their act has found its way everywhere from the ultra-stylish Vogue Ball to old folks homes, and therein lies the charm. So, if by chance you haven't encountered them before, Scottie Road the Musical tells the tale of best pals Caz and Britney, their spell in prison after an altercation in Primark, and how they managed to get out - through show tunes. If you've seen it, you'll know it works; if not, be assured that it does. This is the third time out for their flagship full length show (they created a second, Mis Les, for Homotopia last year), and the formula keeps getting stronger. Along with a new song taking off Les Miserables' At the End of the Day, this version cuts the additional scenes with Eithne Browne that they did at the Epstein last year, and if I'm not wrong the visuals projected as a backdrop seem better this time round. Otherwise, everything is, reassuringly, much the same, with favourites like The Kick Off Tango, Funny Tummy and Don't Cry for Me, Marg and Tina remaining as ridiculously funny as ever. There was one small difference, or something that I may not have noticed before, in that there seemed to be little explanations of some of the Scouse terminology at points, which indicated they could be getting the show ready for life outside of Liverpool.A great start to the theatre year, this sell out run captured Caz and Britney at their bold and brilliant best.
