Spring Awakening on the LIPA Fringe

Luna Theatre Productions is a new female-led company bringing its interpretation of Spring Awakening to Liverpool next month.Comprising of students from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), this amateur production, directed by Onur Orkut, will take place in the Stanley Theatre at Liverpool Guild of Students from March 9 to 11. Spring Awakening is a contemporary rock musical that follows the lives of a group of teenagers who have failed to be educated by their guardians as to the facts of life - with alarming consequences. Based on the 19th Century German play by Frank Wedekind, the musical contains themes that are just as relevant today.Luna's production is an opportunity for young, locally-based performers, designers, technicians and managers to showcase their talents and put their skills into practise in a professional environment. The company formed last year and have held a number of gigs and events to raise the money to stage the show - making it a LIPA Fringe event, not part of the university's main public performance programme. Director Onur says: "Spring Awakening is still relevant in this day and age, with its themes of finding out and experimenting - we’re at an age where new things are emerging all the time."He promises the show will “get the audience into the action," adding: "I don’t think you’ll be able to see it like this anywhere else."All of the characters in the musical are struggling with their own demons; abuse, depression and desperation to be loved. And be warned! The story contains sex, nudity and strong language. It's breakout songs include Mama Who Bore Me and The Bitch of Living, written by Duncan Sheik with book and lyrics by Steven Sater.Tickets for Spring Awakening's evening and matinee performances are available through the Unity's website.
