"THESE pieces of light, flapping against the dark. And they’re screaming, they’re all aroundme. Clouds of dust rise as they swarm… Moths."Sebastian is ‘that kid’ at high school. He’s weird. He smells. He’s obsessed with comics, and talks to himself. But after a catastrophic fallout with his only friend, Claryssa, he wakes up with a moth in a jar by his bed and a calling to save the souls of all humanity...Moth, by Australian playwright Declan Greene, is a play about two young people with nowhere to turn but toward each other. Described as "a heart-wrenching and hilarious firework of a play", it premiered at the HighTide Festival Theatre in 2013.Wirral-based Off the Ground are known for their outdoor theatre productions, but are moving into the studio space of Hope Street Theatre this week to present this traditionally two-handed piece with a company of four young actors. Moth is the latest in a series of studio productions from the company, that has included 17, Overspill, Creature and Orphan of Zhao, to name but a few.Director Dan Meigh said: "Moth is a phenomenally moving play that takes a deeper look at things like friendship, mental illness, hierarchy and bullying. Often bullies don’t realise themselves the damage they are causing, and this is a play that captures that wonderfully."Off the Ground has been producing quality theatre in the region and beyond since 1994. Recently, the company has undertaken a range of challenging projects, from their newly-commissioned touring production of Sinbad to Shakespeare classics such as Hamlet. The youth theatre element of the company is integral to its ongoing work of the company, emphasising it ‘theatre for all’ approach.Catch Moth at the Hope Street Theatre from Thursday (May 16) to Saturday.
