100 days until Playhouse centerary
The Playhouse begins a "significant" countdown today (August 3), that heralds 100 days until the historic Williamson Square venue’s centenary. In 1911 the Liverpool Repertory company was born before changing its name to the Liverpool Playhouse six years later. It was the longest continually-running ‘rep’ company in the country until 1996. Well, the season doesn't start there for a month, and with no Everyman either, we might as well give ourselves something to look forward to. Keep an eye on the Playhouse's online countdown to the big day, with interesting facts and anecdotes about the theatre's history on the home page of the website ahead of the publication of a new book chronicling the theatre’s history. Interesting insights will include the opening production, The Admirable Crichton by Sir James M. Barrie in 1911; Sir Michael Redgrave’s professional debut in 1934; and the addition of the extension, which was finished in 1968 and is Grade II listed along with the original theatre.
