Theatre Uncut

From the international corporate malevolence of Disney to something a tad more grass roots now. Next weekend sees the nationwide protest of Theatre Uncut, an evening of performances of new short plays that the writers have given the nod to be used and put on for free to speak out against Government cuts. Playwrights including Mark Ravenhill, Dennis Kelly, Lucy Kirkwood, Laura Lomas, David Greig, Anders Lustgarten, Jack Thorne and Clara Brennan have agreed to donate their work rights free for the duration of the event.

 And its good to see there will be a performance in Liverpool among the many happening up and down the country. New company Drawlight Productions have secured the Everyman as the location for their Theatre Uncut event, which will be taking place next Saturday (March 19) at 10pm after that evening’s performance of Dead Heavy Fantastic. Tickets are free, but need to be be booked through the Everyman’s box office. The company will be reading three of the works available - A Bigger Banner by Mark Ravenhill, Things That Make No Sense by Dennis Kelly, and Housekeeping by Lucy Kirkwood. Familiar faces involved include John Garfield-Roberts (The Public Reviews), Mark Smith (Spike Theatre) and Lauren Silver (The Games, Impropriety). In the organisation’s own words: "Theatre Uncut is a theatrical response to the cuts outlined by the coalition in October. These cuts are the turning point of a generation, undermining the welfare state, state higher education and the arts in one fell swoop. By creating a nationwide event spearheaded in London we hope to create a theatrical uprising and play our part in the anti cuts movement that is already underway. We are delighted to have such fantastic writers and directors on board to help us achieve something extraordinary."
