All change at Novas CUC
Posters were up to promote upcoming shows from comedian Felix Dexter, who is bringing his 2010 Edinburgh Festival show Multiple Personalities in Order to the venue in November, and poet/ publisher/ all-round madman Felix Dennis brings his poetry evening. Did I Mention the Free Wine? (with free wine, hooray) over in October. Maybe they just have a thing for blokes called Felix, but I think it's the first time shows of this type and scale have been put on at the CUC, off Parliament Street in L8, which still remains a hidden cultural gem more than two years after opening. It would be great if these shows were a success and the building really started meeting its potential - something it has failed miserably to do so far, much to the detriment of a great addition to the Baltic Triangle area, and despite several relaunches and turnovers of staff. The CUC, which boasts a theatre, gallery spaces, restaurant, bar, cinema room, and more, really should be one of the top independent cultural destinations in the city - and with that in mind today they have announced their new (and, unbelievably, first ever) cultural director. Icelandic expat - and director of the NICE Nordic arts festival - Ingi Thor Jonsson is about to get the ball rolling on some very exciting sounding events and there are changes in the pipeline that are bound to see the place starting to get the recognition it deserves.
