Community theatre spins a Yarn
City-based MATE Drama Workshop bring their latest production The Yarn to the Unity tonight (June 23) until Saturday. Written by Rob Brannen, it tells the story of villagers of a rural northern community in the 1800s weaving together a patchwork of dramatic stories, sharing the curious legends, rituals and superstitions that affect their daily lives. With the coming of the industrial age, the villagers sink deep into poverty and the tales they tell become increasingly comic and fantastical. Included tales included the show are How the Village Was Born, The Woman Who Died Five Times, The Leaving and How the Village Died. Formed in 2000, MATE Drama Workshop is celebrating their tenth year as a vibrant, multi-generational community theatre company. Led by Director Gaynor La Rocca and a team of professionals, they welcome people aged from 10 to 75 years old. MATE Drama Workshop stages work spanning a wide range of genres from new musical theatre to adaptations of classic texts, and social drama to site-specific promenade theatre and theatre in the parks. The company perform regularly in theatres and community venues across Merseyside and have staged four sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival over the last ten years.
