Legion of Doom's Sketchpocalypse Now
Legions of Doom come in many forms - classic 80s wrestling tag teams; comic book super-villains; computer hackers; ice hockey players and electronica groups (thanks, Wikipedia!). And in Liverpool we have our own, a trio of sketch comedians whom it could be said are likely to owe some of their somewhat geeky sense of humour to a combination of any and all of the above. Our Legion of Doom - Rob Bond, Oli Bond and Lee Hithersay - can usually be found holding the fort at their own Comedy Knight, a regular evening of sketch comedy at Mello Mello. They are currently getting ready to spend the summer at the Edinburgh Fringe with their fourth full show, Sketchpocalypse Now, which they are previewing before they go at 81 Renshaw on August 2 and 8. "We've got a good crowd at the Comedy Knight now and we know what works," says Rob. "This year we've tried hard to do different things and put more non-verbal comedy, quick form and sketch stuff that's more like theatre comedy in there as well. We want to do more character-driven sketches, although still keeping it very fantastic in a way." They call their comedy 'urban surrealism' and have a penchant for video games, medieval history, sci fi and fantasy, and general silliness. Established characters include Thadeus Bent, the time travelling historian; the notorious Posbod, a menacing puppet parrot LoD have previously been told is too scary; and Shameless-style Mancunian unborn babies nattering in the womb. They also play exaggerated versions of themselves. After Edinburgh, Legion of Doom will start to think about moving to the next level and organising a tour of theatre venues. "Everything in the show now has been performed and re-written again and again - we have forged a comedy sword," pronounces Rob, rather aptly. "This is the best of what we have worked on for the past two years. We love the creative process and writing and working together. I'm proud of this show - we still have a great deal to learn about comedy but this is our best work to date."Read more about the Legion of Doom here.
