Ten reasons to see Jesus Christ Superstar

Ten reasons to see Jesus Christ Superstar

Jesus Christ Superstar is back in Liverpool at the arena tomorrow (October 15). It's great - and here's a few reasons why: 1. Tim MinchinMADEUP had a soft spot for Minchin before this show, but staggered out of the arena this time last year a woman obsessed. Frankly, he could make reasons 1 to 10 on his own, but that would make for a boring list. His Judas is extraordinarily good - he rocks the hell out of Lloyd Webber, looks awesome with the dreds and fake sleeve tattoos, and his character's demise shouldn't leave a dry eye in the house. 2. It's an international smash hit nowLest we forget, it should have been back in Liverpool back in the spring, but was postponed so the production could go on tour across Australia and elsewhere. Minchin, for one, was very apologetic. "I really hope you can come to the rescheduled dates… It’ll be worth the wait, I reckon", he said. I like to believe him. 3. Mel CMel C may have made her name as the only Spice Girl who could sing - and she made her way into musical theatre on the back of that in roles that may have gained critical acclaim, but were gimmicky (Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers) and just didn't really work with that voice I'd wager. Mary Magdelene, however, does. Whether it's the modern production or the natural performance, she does the business.  4. An arena show that delivers the goodsA show like this can be off-putting - is the venue too big, is there any character to it? Although those are both valid points depending on the sort of thing you're used to seeing, JCS is most definitely fit for purpose. (An arena show was also how it was devised back in the 70s.) 5. Chris Moyles is okayBefore he took to the stage in JCS - and proved a great favourite with the crowd - there'd been a big debate among actors as to whether or not this little bit of stunt casting took a job away from a professional. And personally, I'd have rather stabbed myself in the ear with a fork than listen to his tedious radio show. However, I enjoyed his turn - on film he looks a little out of his depth, but live on the night he brings a real burst of energy. 6. Ben Forstera) Hits the notes in Gethsemene, and b) is a total sweetie. Here's a chat with him from earlier in the year when he was being Brad in the Rocky Horror Show. 7. There's no AutotuneThere's some HORRIBLE Autotuning going on on the CD and DVD versions of this show. Even Tim Minchin said it was humiliating and "fucking rude". So there's no chance of that happening live. 8. "I think that is the best I have ever heard Jesus Christ Superstar sung."Said the man who wrote it9. Tim MinchinLet's just throw him in there again because he's awesome and I'm nearly there with the ten things. 10. Groupon savingsThere was a Groupon offer on tickets the other day that might still be valid, if you needed a little incentive.
