Autumn at Unity
season at the Unity Theatre as its 30th anniversary celebrations continue. Artistic director Graeme Philips said: “In the lead up to Christmas we will re-invent our building, premiere a major international co-production, transport you to a magical and moving site-specific production, and blow you away with some remarkable stories told in extraordinary ways. We hope that you will join us as frequently as you can to enjoy one of the richest programmeswe have ever put together.” Programme highlights include Upside Down, Wrong Way Round from September 9 to 11, a world premiere that will weave around the nooks and crannies of the Unity before spilling onto Hope Place and up into Hope Street in an innovative experience celebrating 30 years of the venue. The building will be transformed through a series of film-noir inspired performances and installations. Another first will be Gold Mountain (October 6 – 16),a collaboration between award-winning French-Canadian company Les Deux Mondes and Unity, described as “a spectacular emotive multimedia performance with stunning imagery, film, music and soundscapes”. David Yee is trying to piece together the broken jigsaw of his father’s life – exploring his rambling stories in search for family truths. But when every answer poses more questions will David find the man he barely knew? Gay arts and culture festival Homotopia 2010 returns to Unity with a packed programme of theatre, exhibitions, dance, film and comedy from November 2 to 12. Interiors (October 20 – 21) is Vanishing Point’s award-winning and internationally acclaimed production inspired by Nobel Prize winner Maurice Maeterlinck’s astonishing play, Interior. For The Best (November 16 – 28) is another world premiere, an imaginative journey through a family¹s experience of living with chronic illness. Conceived and directed by MarkStoror, For The Best is set in the heart of Liverpool One on the fourth floor of the historic Gostin Building. The Christmas family show this year is Red Shoes (November 30 – Jan 22 2011), a new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, and adults can enjoy Terry Titter’s Christmas Caper (December 9 – 18, over 16s only).
