Liverpool actress marks 21 years as Shirley Valentine
The only UK performances of Willy Russell’s Shirley Valentine this year will be taking place in September at St Helens Theatre Royal. Reprising her role is one of the all-time great Shirleys is Liverpool comedian Pauline Daniels, in her 21st anniversary performing the classic one-woman show. She said: “I have played this role every year for the last 20 years and it’s the perfect venue for a perfect piece to celebrate my 21st year, I'm really looking forward to bringing my best friend Shirley to St Helens.” Living in a world of kitchens, cooking and faded dreams Shirley is living a monotone and regretful existence, but when best friend Jane offers her a two week holiday in Greece, she struggles to make a life-changing decision. Should she pack her bags and head for a life of sun, sea and taramasalata, or stay and continue to endure the slog of her humdrum life? Since its premier in 1986 Shirley Valentine has become a theatrical institution and a much loved mainstay on the boards of playhouses across the globe. For Pauline’s 21st anniversary, Willy Russell has given special permission to bring this Liverpudlian legend back home to Merseyside. Bursting with traditional Scouse wit, Shirley Valentine is a revival of a much loved one-woman show about a jaded housewife’s journey of self discovery which continually brings new generations of audiences to enjoy. Pauline is Shirley once more between September 13 to 16. For tickets and more information, call 01744 756 000 or click www.sthelenstheatreroyal.com.
