Mark Womack leads cast of Royal Court's Bouncers
Actor Mark Womack will return to the Royal Court stage this summer, just months after his rare stint treading the boards in Scot Williams's Hope back in March. The theatre ran into trouble earlier in the year, when its summer programming fell into disarray after plans to revive the popular football show One Night in Istanbul fell through. It has now been replaced with a new production of John Godber's classic Bouncers, with Womack, Mickey Starke, Paul Broughton and Danny O'Brien at the helm. The show will be directed by Bob Eaton. In what might be seen as the inverse to Ladies Day, opening this week, Bouncers tells the tale of club doormen Ralph, Les, Judd and Lucky Eric getting ready for another night on the job - and they’ve seen it all. Kevin Fearon, chief executive of Royal Court Liverpool, says the show has a personal appeal: “Bouncers has been a favourite of mine because it was the first show that I saw at the Everyman back in 1985 with John McArdle, Terry Melia and Con O’Neil in the cast. It has always been my ambition to produce something as good as that again. I’m delighted to get a cast of this kind of quality too. Each one of them has impressed in the past here and I can’t wait to see them all working together.” He might be on to something. Catch Bouncers from July 19 to August 17.
