Slung Low's Knowledge Emporium

Slung Low, the Leeds-based theatre company behind the Everyman's 2010 Anthology performances and the theatre's closing ceremony, returned to Liverpool last week as part of their nationwide search to uncover everything we know.You might have seen the Knowledge Emporium, an old fashioned sweet shop converted from a 60s’ caravan, plonked outside the Playhouse, where the Slung Low gang were inviting members of the public to come inside and swap snippets of personal knowledge - from recipes to memories to facts and stories - for sweets. Part of the city-wide In Other Words festival, the project was also part of the celebrations to mark the reopening of the Liverpool Central Library.The accumulation of this knowledge - collected in the Big Book of Everything We Know, no less, resulted in two performances over the weekend inspired by the Liverpool entries.The Knowledge Emporium began its journey at Tavistock Place, off Portobello Market, in July 2010, where more than 1000 people made entries in the Big Book of Everything We Know. Since then, it has travelled around the country to differing communities, collecting knowledge and performing readings of what people know.Slung Low's artistic director Alan Lane said: “If there was a place in the world destined to truly appreciate the motto of the Emporium – that every individual has a piece of knowledge, a story, a memory that would be of interest to other people – then it is the city of Liverpool. It was fantastic to swop our sweets for your knowledge.”
