Time for De:Light in Vauxhall
As Young Everyman and Playhouse go from strength to strength at the minute, there is a chance to see what they've been doing behind the scenes next week. The theatres' Young Technicians are getting ready to showcase a larger than life piece of public art at 8.30pm on Thursday, March 29, that will transform the Trinity Vaults building in Vauxhall, North Liverpool (mock up image pictured above). A projection utilising images and real time streaming will create a unique work of art on the building’s façade. Titled De:Light, it will be the culmination of a six month project working with acclaimed international artists Illuminos. De:Light is a "technically led piece", which means it has put the emphasis on the work of the young technicians - aged 16 to 25 years-old - allowing them to have artistic control of the installation. The piece will transform the familiar Trinity Vaults building on Latimer Road in Vauxhall into a giant touch screen video cube, with the performer’s hands using flicks and swipes to project inspiring, witty and imaginative images of the past, present and future on to the building. The theatres say that De:Light is a project that seeks to find the theatre technicians of the future through professional training and development. It provides a bespoke opportunity for young people not in full time employment, education or training to develop skills and experience ‘on the job’ in lighting, sound and audio visual media. One Young Technician said: “I have learnt more in the past two months than I did three years at college. This course is exactly what I want to be doing. It is something quite different to what I have done before but now I think that I would be interested in studying it at university.” Illuminos, Matt and Rob Vale, are international audio visual artists. The pair create visually inventive, memorable projection artworks and events and were long-listed for the Northern Art Prize in 2010. Their work seeks to transform spaces through light projection, animation and sound, asking audiences to reassess the potential of those ordinary places. They say De:Light will bring world class public art to the heart of the community, where such artwork is rarely showcased, to transform the outside environment into something truly remarkable through light and sound. Rob Vale of Illuminos said: "This project is a fascinating one for us as we've worked with the young technicians from the outset, on every aspect of what is needed to create one of these pieces. This means looking at content, concept, filming and editing, but also in finding the right building to start with. The young technicians have really risen to the challenge of working on a complex live project, and we can’t wait to share what they have produced with us"
