Why are we so Thirsty?

Possibly a suitable post to follow on from a Doug Stanhope review, Thirsty is a new, acclaimed touring show inspired by and based on our nation’s love affair with alcohol. Fusing live music, verbatim text and physical theatre, theatre company The Paper Birds explore the stories and social repercussions of lost memories and gained traumas, bruised knees, uncontrollable laughter, stained beds and sore heads. A dynamic theatrical exploration delving beyond statistics, facts and figures, Thirsty looks to the faces and the voices of everyone who likes a drink and asks why, as a nation, are we so thirsty? The Paper Birds are Jemma McDonnell (artistic director), Elle Moreton (creative producer), and Kylie Walsh (outreach director). The story behind the show was told in this interesting piece in the Guardian recently. The company says it strives to create and share devised work that is important – “culturally, socially and politically observational and conversationally urgent”. Their productions emerge from a female perspective and often prioritise stories of women. From this, The Paper Birds hope to touch and engage their audiences both intellectually and emotionally and ensure that the work remains to be diverse and relevant in the theatrical climate. Thirsty is on at the Unity on Wednesday, March 28.
