L.O.V.E performance tribute to Nigel Charnock

A celebrated piece of physical theatre comes to the Unity this month in tribute to one of its most inspiring collaborators, the late Nigel Charnock. 

Based on Shakespeare’s sonnets, L.O.V.E. is regarded as one of Volcano physical theatre company's most enduring and memorable works; but the sad early death of director/choreographer Charnock in August has turned the new incarnation, which he would have once again been involved in, into a bittersweet celebration.

L.O.V.E. first appeared in 1993, when it won a Time Out Theatre Award and toured to festivals all over the world.

Its highly-charged athletic style helped to define the term 'physical theatre', and it represents a historic collaboration of some of the most distinctive British pioneers of that genre in the 90s – bringing together the boundless energy of Nigel Charnock (who had co-founded DV8) with Volcano’s dual performance powerhouse of Fern Smith and Paul Davies, and the uncompromisingly beautiful design of Volcano co-founder Andrew Jones.

Though the show has aged well and remained fresh,  Volcano decided this time around to maintain the pace, vigour and youth of the piece with a brand new young cast, which includes Mairi Phillips (who Unity audiences may have seen in Volcano’s Clockwork Orange last year).

L.O.V.E. will be restaged using, as far as possible, the original design, and Nigel Charnock’s original choreography, with space for the new cast to make their own distinctive marks upon the piece.
